Ahmed Musa was born on October 14, 1992, to Alhaji Musa and Sarah Moses in Jos, Nigeria. He was born in a Muslim family; his mother was the second wife of his father. On the heels of the death of his father when he was 7, he was later raised by a single mother.
Musa started playing football at a very young age and in 2008, he joined the Nigerian Academy, GBS Football Academy, from where he was loaned to Nigerian clubs, such as JUTH FC and Kano Pillars FC.
He is a former record holder for the highest no. of goals scored in a single season in the NPL (Nigeria Premier League), but in 2011, the record was surpassed by Jude Aneke.
