Burna Boy and Wizkid Win at the 2021 Grammy Awards
Nigeria music stars Burna Boy and Wizkid each one their first Grammy Award at the event held yesterday at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California, United States.
Burna Boy won in the Best Global Music Album category formerly known as the Best World Music Album beating fellow nominees Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar and Tinariwen. Fellow Afrobeats star Wizkid won in the Best Music Video category for featuring in Beyonce’s Brown Skin Girl song alongside her daughter Blue Ivy, from The Lion King: The Gift album.
Real name Damini Ogulu, Burna was nominated in the same category at last year’s award for his African Giant album but missed out to Senegalese legendary singer Angelique Kidjo. The Nigerian became determined more than ever releasing a globally accepted album Twice As Tall with Sean “Diddy” Combs and executive producer and guest starring a host of international artists such as Stormzy, Cold Play’s Chris Martin, Sauti Sol, among others.
Wizkid, real name Ayodeji Balogun got his first nomination in 2017 for his contribution to Canadian rapper Drake Views album. Beyonce’s Brown Skin Girl song featuring Wizkid made waves when it was released as a celebration of black girls and women of colour and it is no surprise it was announced as a winner.
